The Ford Mustang has been named the world’s best-selling sports coupé in 2015. According to IHS Automotive registration data, the iconic Ford Mustang has sold more units than any other sports coupé last year. In fact, a tremendous 110,000 Mustang Coupés sold around the world, making the model the only sports coupé to sell more than 100,000 vehicles in 2015.
Ford also sold approximately 30,000 Mustang Convertibles, making their total sales of the make a vast 141,868.
The iconic “pony car” remains infinitely popular and the Mustang is now on sale in 140 markets, including Australia, where it has already sold out through 2017.
Erich Merkle, Ford Sales Analyst, reveals interesting patterns emerging in the sales demographics: “While much of the growth in Mustang demand in the United States has come from coastal markets – especially Southern California – and millennials opting for the 2.3-liter EcoBoost® engine, buyers in other countries prefer the V8”, he says. “That unmistakable V8 warble is a hot commodity outside the US.”
He also said of the release: “US consumers have enjoyed interesting foreign sports cars for decades, so it was time for the Americans to return the favor with the worldwide launch of the new Mustang. Global markets have responded in a huge way. Ford Mustang was the only sports coupé in the world with more than 100,000 units registered last year.”
Buyers in Europe are very keen to get their hands on the latest model. In fact, 16,600 people have ordered a Ford Mustang since they went on sale in the continent last summer. Here in the UK, total Mustang sales amount to 3,500 cars. In March, the Mustang was the highest selling sports coupé in both France and Germany – a market which also enjoyed the highest rate of convertible sales, which made up one in every three models sold.
Rather astonishingly, Mustang sales in March in the US outperformed sales of the new Chevrolet Camaro and Dodge Challenger combined, according to published figures. Moreover, the Mustang was the best-selling sports coupé for 2015 and the first quarter of 2016 in the US, according to industry-reported numbers. In China, the Mustang was also the best-selling sports coupé for the first quarter of 2015 and buyers in the country favoured the EcoBoost version.
So why is the Mustang so popular amongst car enthusiasts? It is thought that it offers much more value for money than other similar sports cars. But more importantly, it’s probably because this is the first time the Mustang has been officially available for 50 years and fans are desperate to get their hands on such an exclusive model. The Mustang is also an iconic car for American culture, which explains why sales in the US have rocketed. So what about European and Asian buyers? Well it seems that an iconic vehicle has global importance and recognition, and the ability to unite car enthusiasts from around the world.
