Watch now: Project RX documentary

Ford Creating the Supreme Rally Cross Car

Ford Focus RS RX Development

A new documentary series will go behind the scenes of the Ford Focus RS RX’s development.

Car enthusiasts can now gain a real insight into the development of the Ford Focus RS RX in a new four-part documentary series. The vehicle was designed to be the supreme rallycross vehicle in the FIA World Rallycross Championship. Created through Ford’s collaborations with M-Sport and Hoonigan Racing Division, the car has been produced using high-tech instruments and cutting-edge techniques.

With behind the scenes clips, and interviews with the engineers and drivers, this documentary is the ultimate vision of what it takes to develop the Focus RS RX for competition.

The first episode of the series, ‘Project RX’, investigates the design and creation of the vehicle in Ford Performance headquarters in Dearborn, Michigan, and at the M-Sport race shop in Cockermouth, England.

The Ford RS RX is one of the manufacturer’s most exciting new vehicle developments to date. For decades, vehicles with the RS badge have triumphed in rallies, and the badge is only used for vehicles with the highest level of Ford Performance technology. The Focus RS RX has a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine with 600bhp, compared to the regular Focus RS which has a 2.3-litre Ford Ecoboost petrol engine with 345bhp. The launch of the new car, therefore, is particularly exciting, especially for rally enthusiasts.

Dave Pericak, Global Director of Ford Performance, highlights why the new development is so exciting to rally enthusiasts. He explains, “Rallycross is a sport that requires the best…it requires you to perform at levels that are world class. We’re going to use this to prove our technologies and capabilities. The partnership [with M-Sport] is unlike anything we’ve done in the past, and this car is going to be the best.”

But it’s equally as exciting forthe engineers and the team themselves, who have dedicated their time to creating the ultimate rally car. As Nolan Holiday, Aerodynamics Engineer of Ford Performance, points out, “We’ve been doing a bit of to and fro with the design studio. At the end of the day, even the guys in the studio admit that this car is out to win races. It has to look good, but it has to perform.”

And the drivers have been put to the test too, as Ken Block, Ford Focus RS RX Race Driver of Hoonigan Racing Division, explained. “This project has been probably the most dynamic involvement of my team in a car like this. Trying to race at the highest level of the sport and doing it with factory help and with a race shop like M-Sport has been incredible.”

Ford is competing in the FIA World Rallycross championship with a two-car team. Both drivers will compete under the Hoonigan Racing Division banner and will compete again on May 6-8 in Hockenheim, Germany.
