Ford has announced a new partnership agreement with Team Sky, one of the world’s most successful elite cycling teams. Ford will now supply all of Team Sky’s cars and vans.
Team Sky is a phenomenally successful and popular team in professional cycling. The prestigious Tour de France road race has been won by a Team Sky cyclist four times in the past five years, with famous riders Sir Bradley Wiggins and Chris Froome.
Participating in events such as the Tour de France requires huge endurance, from both the cyclists and their support teams. A key part of this support effort is the team cars and vans which follow the race and provide food and water, as well as carrying spare bikes.
Team Sky has chosen Ford to supply these cars, and will drive the Ford Mondeo estate, S-MAX, Kuga, Tourneo Custom and Transit van models. The cars will wear the team’s distinctive black and blue livery and feature in the Tour de France, Giro d’Italia and Vuelta a España.
The Kuga, S-MAX and Mondeo models will be equipped with Ford’s Intelligent All-Wheel Drive system. This enables the cars to cope with everything the cyclists take on, from Belgian cobbled streets to steep Alpine hill climbs.
Sir David Brailsford is the head of Team Sky, and said: “Ford is the perfect partner for Team Sky, sharing our core values of combining technology and innovation to meet the specific and often varied demands needed in any high performance environment. As we embark on our racing programme, Ford’s range of vehicles will play a vital role for Team Sky, delivering the right car for the right environment as we strive towards even greater success and more race wins in 2016 and beyond.”
