Gates Ford at the Great Dunmow Soapbox Race 2019

Sunday 26th May marked the second annual Great Dunmow Soapbox Race. Inspired by the international Red Bull Soapbox Race, the idea was developed and subsequently organised by the local Round Table bringing the racing excitement to the streets of Great Dunmow.

The Great Dunmow Round Table are an organisation consisting of local men, aged between 18 and 45, who generate funds for local causes through fundraising events such as this, the Great Dunmow Carnival and the Dunmow Fireworks Display.

Due to its popularity in 2018, the event made a welcome return this year as thousands lined the streets of Great Dunmow in pursuit of the action. There was also a giant screen in the adjoining park meaning that many more spectators could watch and soak up the atmosphere of the day.

Sixty-one teams raced against the clock and one another in a bid to be the 2019 champions, taking on the course consisting of tricky jumps and the now infamous “blizzard alley”.

As well as sponsoring the event, we were very proud to get involved and enter a team into the proceedings for the first time. Our Austin Powers themed Soapbox was expertly driven by Vehicle Technician, Tim Goddard – who looked rather fetching in his velour suit. Also in our team were Neal Norman (cunningly disguised as Dr Evil), Lawrence Ridley (Mini Me) and Christian Barker – top marks for the inflatable suit but the mask was somewhat dubious! Our team achieved a time of 30.14 seconds – not bad for a first attempt.

We look forward to the Great Dunmow Soapbox Race 2020 where we will be back with a brand-new Soapbox and a whole new set of accompanying costumes!
