Gates Motability

By becoming a Motability Scheme user you can lease a new car that has been modified for your requirements using the government mobility allowance. A number of allowances are covered among the Scheme’s eligibility criteria, as we explain below.

Which Government grants are covered?

The following allowances are accepted by the scheme to pay for a new car lease:
Higher Rate Mobility Component of Disability Living Allowance (HRMC DLA) at £64.50 per week as of April 11, 2022
Enhanced Rate Mobility Component of Personal Independence Payment (ERMC PIP) at £62.55 per week as of April 12, 2021
War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement (WPMS) at £69.85 per week as of April 14, 2021
Armed Forces Independence Payment (AFIP) at £62.55 per week as of April 14, 2021

There is no upper age limit to become a Scheme user, the only stipulation is that you receive one of the above allowances and that you are set to receive at least 12 months’ more payments. If your funds are due to end before your lease plan, you need to contact the Department for Work and Pensions for a renewal pack so that your claim can be re-assessed.

More about these government grants can be found here

Are there any grants that aren’t covered?

The Attendance Allowance cannot be used to fund a lease through the Scheme.

Who can benefit from a Motability car?

It isn’t just the mobility grant beneficiary that can make use of a vehicle accessed through the Scheme. Up to two named drivers can be added to the lease, and they can include family, friends, carers, or anyone else you trust. A third driver can also be added at an extra cost.

The person the vehicle has been leased for does not need to be in the car for a named driver to use it. This means that you or the person you care for can stay at home while errands are made. All named drivers will need to sign a Statement of Responsibilities before the car is delivered to make sure they understand the terms of the agreement and are aware of misuse.
