Electric Car Service Requirements

Electric Vehicles (EVs), in particular, require less maintenance than regular cars because an electric drivetrain features fewer working parts than are possessed by a combustion engine. Nevertheless, an EV still requires regular maintenance.

Below are the main areas of inspection during an Electric Vehicle service:

Next
Prev
Electric motor(s) and batteries We recommend following your car’s recommended service schedule.
Oil and coolant The former ensures that transmission is sufficiently lubricated while the latter keeps the batteries cool. Both need to be topped-up on a regular basis (and changed, but less frequently as compared with a combustion-engined vehicle).
Brakes Since EVs use regenerative braking, the pads and discs are less apt to deteriorate as quickly as those of combustion-engined vehicles; nevertheless, they will need periodic replacement.
Tyres EVs tend to be a little heavier than regular cars because of battery weight. Also, EVs benefit from instant torque (and therefore, acceleration). Both of these factors can cause increased tyre deterioration.
Suspension The extra weight caused by a lithium-ion battery (which provides the electric motor with energy) has an effect on springs and dampers. However, these will be checked as part of regular servicing.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How long will my battery last?

    Close

It’s not unreasonable to expect your car’s battery to last for at least 10 years.

What happens if my battery runs flat?

    Close

If you own an EV that runs out of charge, you won’t be able to drive it. However, there’s no need for this situation to arise if you plan your charges around your journeys. Certainly, charging your car overnight makes a lot of sense – and being aware of your nearest public charging point is advisable. Do EVs react to temperature?

    Close

Generally speaking, an EV’s lithium-ion battery operates most efficiently at temperatures of between 20°C and 25°C. Extreme temperatures (hot or cold) can have a negative effect on range and even cause damage if exposure is prolonged.

How often does an EV need servicing?

    Close

With the Ford Mustang Mach-E, we recommend a service every 12 months (or 10,000 miles).

    Do EVs require MOTs?

    Close

Yes. In this respect, they’re no different from regular cars. However, there is no need for an emissions or noise test as part of an MOT.
