Motability FAQs

Want to know more about the Motability Scheme?

Do you think you may be eligible and are interested in joining the scheme? Or perhaps you are an existing customer coming to the end of your current agreement and looking to renew. Either way, at Gates, we can help with any questions that you may have. We have put together the following information to cover some of the questions we are regularly asked.

Motability Applications and Placing An Order

If I want to visit my local Gates dealership, do I need to make an appointment?

Close

You do not need to make an appointment to visit us, however, we would encourage booking an appointment where possible to ensure social distancing can be adhered to. Whilst we are doing everything we can to continue to keep our customers and staff safe, please do not hesitate let us know of any other measures we can take in order for you to feel confident and comfortable during your visit.

I am an existing customer. When can I place an application for my next car?

Close

If you are in the final three months of your lease, we would encourage you to go ahead and place your order as soon as you’re ready. Please contact your local Gates dealership in the first instance and one of our friendly team will discuss your application with you further and introduce you to the Ford Motability Cars currently available.

I am an existing customer, but do not want to place an order for my next car at the moment. What are my options?

Close

It is recommended that you place your order in the last three months of your lease, as you normally would. Due to ongoing challenges in the motor industry, there may be some disruption to supply chains and it is possible that deliveries of some new cars will be delayed. With the increased car delivery times for some makes and models, it may be worthwhile to make enquiries about your new car sooner than you may have done previously.

Why is there a delay with vehicle orders currently?

Close

New car supply is currently disrupted due to a global shortage of semiconductors; these are "chips" which feature in many electrical items. High demand for electrical items during the COVID-19 pandemic has therefore led to a shortage of these semiconductors. This shortage is expected to continue throughout 2022. Furthermore, factories have also been affected by staff shortages due to COVID-19 isolation requirements and wider supply chain problems caused by the pandemic. It is worth checking with local Gates dealership if the car you are interested in is in stock or whether it will need to be ordered from the manufacturer, which may well mean a delay.

Eligibility

I am interested in joining the Motability Scheme, how do I know if I am eligible?

Close

There are several different mobility allowances that can be used in exchange for a brand new Ford Motability car on the Motability Scheme. These include:

  • Enhanced Rate of the Mobility Component of Personal Independence Payment (PIP)
  • Higher Rate Mobility Component of the Disability Living Allowance (DLA)
  • War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement (WPMS)
  • Armed Forces Independence Payment (AFIP)

To qualify, you must be in receipt of one of the above, and have at least 12 months’ award length remaining.

Am I eligible for the Motability Scheme if I am over 65?

Close

If you’re wondering who can drive a Motability car, the answer is that anyone in receipt of a qualifying mobility allowance can apply for the scheme. If you’re aged 65 and over and receive any of the benefits listed below, you could be eligible for one of our Motability cars. Get in touch with our team today to find out more.

  • Enhanced Rate of the Mobility Component of Personal Independence Payment (PIP)
  • Higher Rate Mobility Component of the Disability Living Allowance (DLA)
  • War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement (WPMS)
  • Armed Forces Independence Payment (AFIP)

Who can benefit from a Motability car?

Close

It isn’t just the recipient of the mobility grant that can make use of a vehicle through the Motability Scheme. Up to two named drivers can be added to the lease, and they can include family, friends, carers, or anyone else you trust. A third driver can also be added at an extra cost.

The person the vehicle has been leased for does not need to be in the car for a named driver to use it. This means that you or the person you care for can stay at home while errands are made. All named drivers will need to sign a Statement of Responsibilities before the car is delivered to make sure they understand the terms of the agreement and are aware of misuse.

Are there any grants that aren’t covered?

Close

The Attendance Allowance cannot be used to fund a lease through the Scheme.

Motability Scheme Benefits

  • A brand new car every three years
  • Breakdown cover
  • Servicing, maintenance and repairs
  • Tyre and windscreen repairs
  • Road tax

In addition, you can nominate up to two adults to drive on your behalf.

How do I know which Ford Motability Cars are suitable for me?

Close

At your local Gates Ford dealership, we can arrange for you to view and also test drive your preferred Ford Cars – choose from the Ford Kuga and Ford Puma amongst other Ford Motability Cars available. Our Motability Specialists will also be able to discuss with you any special requirements that you may have.

I am eligible for the scheme but is it possible for someone else to drive the vehicle?

Close

Yes. Insurance is included for up to three named drivers –these can be friends, family or carers. When you place your order, two drivers can be added to the insurance. It is also possible to add a third driver too after you have collected your Ford Motability Car. What’s more, you can easily add or change named drivers during your lease.

Is there anything that is not included on the Motability Scheme?

Close

Although almost everything is included, you will be responsible for paying for the following:

  • Fuel and consumables, such as screen wash.
  • Optional extras not fitted as standard; ensure that you check the vehicle specification with your chosen Gates dealership.
  • Insurance claims; an insurance excess will apply on any claim for loss or damage. This excess amount varies depending on the age and experience of the driver (full details can be obtained on application).
  • Fines; any parking or speeding fines are your responsibility.
  • Theft of, or damage to, personal belongings; these include wheelchairs, coats or mobile phones (full details can be obtained on application).

Motability vehicle adaptations

How do adaptations help?

Close

There are many different types of adaptations available and depending on which you choose, they provide assistance for you whilst driving the car, accessing the vehicle or providing stowage for items such as wheelchairs or scooters. The type of adaptation required depends on your individual needs, so speak to one of our Motability Specialists who will be able to discuss this with you further and provide you with more information with regards to Ford models that will best suit your requirements.

How much do adaptations cost?

Close

Many adaptations are covered by the regular payment you make monthly. At Gates Ford, your Motability Specialist can arrange for adaptations to be made through our network of approved contacts.

Is it possible to have more than one adaptation fitted?

Close

Yes, this is possible. When you visit your local Gates dealership, our Motability Specialists will discuss your requirements with you and advise you on the most suitable adaptations. Adaptations are usually fitted at the start of your lease. They can also be added during your lease however, this will need to be arranged through an approved Motability adaptations installer and this may be subject to further charge.

Are adaptations covered by insurance?

Close

If adaptations are fitted at the beginning of the Motability lease, they will be covered by your insurance with RSA Motability (RSAM).

Can I transfer adaptations from my previous vehicle?

Close

Some are transferrable however, this will depend on the adaptation being suitable for your new car. Your Motability Specialist will be able to advise you further and suggest which are most suitable for your required adaptation. In most cases, there will be no extra cost to transfer an existing adaptation to your new car providing it is done at the start of the lease.

Coming To The End Of Your Lease?

What happens at the end of my Motability vehicle lease?

Close

When your agreement comes to its end, you will be presented with three options: return the vehicle and resume receipt of your allowance; continue using the vehicle; obtain a different vehicle via the scheme.

I am coming to the end of my lease and would like to return the vehicle. How do I do this?

Close

Please contact your local Gates dealership where one of our Motability Specialists will be able to guide you through the process.

What happens if my next order is delayed?

Close

If your order is delayed and your new car is unlikely to be delivered before the end of your current lease, the lease on your current vehicle can be extended until the new vehicle is ready. You’ll just need to make sure you’ve completed the MOT on your vehicle by the original lease end date in order for the lease extension to be approved. Your MOT test can be carried out at any of our Gates Ford dealerships - you can make a booking here.
